The Moral Failure of the Left

Liberals are worried about the growing influence of the religious right in the political realm.  Thus, several groups have formed to shed a different light on the faithful's ability to mix religion with politics.  Some of these groups claim they are non-partisan (uh-huh), others admit that they are politically liberal.  What they have in common is that they want to offer a more progressive view regarding the role of faith in politics.  In other words, they feel their views are not being heard and want to drown out the voice of the religious right with whom they disagree.  Their primary goal is for national leadership change.

Today I visited the FaithfulAmerican.org website.  FA's an advocacy group that addresses what they consider social injustice.  Through Internet donations they managed to raise $175,000 to pay for the ads that they ran in Iraq, apologizing for the "moral failure" of the United States on the prison abuse scandal.  I'm sure the commercial left the Iraqis thinking that Americans are either morons or druggies.

I wonder if these Clergy in America who care so much about America's "moral failure" are outraged about partial-birth-abortion.  According to their Purpose and Profile, they're an "interfaith voice for liberal and progressive religion in the political arena ("the Religious Left!") challenging the religious claims of the Administration and presenting an alternative to the lockstep Republicanism of the extreme Religious Right."  By using the term "lockstep" and "Republican
ism" it would seem that they are equating the Religious Right with the Third Right.

I searched the FA's website and found nothing that indicates the Religious Left has a problem with killing unborn babies.  There's nothing on the site on abortion or partial-birth-abortion.  They are worried about Iraqi prisoner abuse.

I am trying to understand why these people were so concerned about the Abu Ghraib prison abuses that they'd spend big money to run an add on Arab television.  I viewed the ad on FA's website--you should too--and was mortified!  The Arab people who watched it must think Americans are complete morons, or worse.
